Diversity at Frost Brown Todd

Diversity. In Action.

Diversity is not just a program—it’s a process. It’s not about numbers—it’s about people. It’s not just about celebrating differences—it’s about understanding what we have in common.

These are the principles that have led Frost Brown Todd’s approach to diversity to be recognized as one of the most progressive in the legal industry. But at its core, there is something much more fundamental driving the firm’s growth and leadership in this area—we have turned principles into actions.

Today — an ever-growing mentoring program, a commitment to work/life balance, a corporate culture of acceptance, and an energized women’s initiative continue that momentum. And perhaps the strongest statement we’ve made about our commitment to diversity has been in creating a Director of Diversity position at the firm — making a single person responsible for driving our efforts and to ensure diversity was given the full attention and resources needed.

Kimberly S. Amrine enjoys a unique and rewarding dual role as Director of Diversity at Frost Brown Todd, a unique position among U.S. law firms, where a minimum of one-third of her billable hours’ goal is applied to diversity efforts. Efforts that go beyond traditional issues involving minority retention or sensitivity training—they include evolving diversity initiatives like flex time and telecommuting.

”Diversity isn't something you can do in fits and spurts—it takes a commitment on a daily basis,” Kim says. “I report directly to our co-managing partner and Executive Committee and we’re making a difference through accountability, and our direct connection to leadership.”

Kim and Louisville attorney, Bonita K. Black, co-chair FBT’s Diversity Committee. Their collective mission is to create an inclusive environment through recruiting, retaining and elevating a diverse group of lawyers, as well as community involvement and professional advancement efforts.

And diversity isn’t just an internal training mechanism. It is vital to our clients’ success and our communities as well. Today’s complex problems need to be approached from varying points of view. And the more diverse views we can bring to the table, the better we believe the insight—and the solutions that comes from it—will be.

“When you think about it, diversity and inclusion are really about simple things,” Co-Managing Member Dick Erickson reveals. “It’s about communicating. It’s about listening. It’s about talking to people in hallways and raising everyone’s consciousness—from the executive committee to the youngest attorney.”

As you can see, diversity is more than a talking point at Frost Brown Todd, we're putting it into action. And those actions are having an impact on our people. But we’re far from finished. And, frankly, we never will be. Our real goal is to provide the best possible legal counsel. And we do that when we have the best possible legal talent—and the most diverse points of view. Our clients deserve nothing less.
